Choose a style which you like, and which matches your personality or skilled image. The absolute most important thing to keep in mind is that the info you place up front should be the absolute most important for the CVs purpose. Based on the nation you wind up in you may need to add your photograph. There is no purpose putting a lot of det ailed information into a CV that doesnt add any value, and in actuality, just dilutes the effect. In truth, it might actually demonstrate a deficiency of experience if you spell out an abbreviation that is believed to be common understanding. Prior to going on to fill in your other abilities, write all of them down on a sheet of scrap paper and choose which ones that you wish to include. Quick Navigation If youre interested in working in research or academia, you may have to create a CV for potential employers. You will typically be asked for one when you submit an application for work. Also, you always need to tailor your CV to the job which you are applying for. Chronological CV is excellent for job seekers always on the lookout for work in exactly the same specific career area. Lastly, what things to include isnt standardized but rather related to the position youre applying for. If youre applying for posts beyond the UK, bear in mind that employers in different countries are very likely to have different expectations of what a CV should include and how it needs to be laid out. So, when you submit an application for work in Greece, the united kingdom, or Denmark, your prospective employer will ask you for a CV. In reality, staying motivated and fresh in the very same sector or with the very same employer is an actual achievement. What Is So Fascinating About Cv Stands for? 5 Warning Signs You Might Be About to Get Fired

5 Warning Signs You Might Be About to Get Fired5 Warning Signs You Might Be About to Get FiredWhether youre fired for cause, or made redundant as part of a mass layoff, losing your job never feels good. Even if you were less than enamored of your former gig, chances are you need the money and dont need the stress of navigating the job hunt. Alas, into most lives, a few pink slips must fall. If youre going to lose your job, the best-case scenario is to figure it out long before you walk into a conference room only to be greeted by a somber HR rep that way, you can get started on your job search while youre still employed. Here are a few warning signs that its about to be your turn to apply for unemployment* 1. The Company Isnt Doing Well Depending on your role at the organization, you might have direct insight into the companys fortunes. If your employer is hemorrhaging clients or cash, getting a drubbing in the press, or suffering other reputation reversals in the industry, you r job and those of your colleagues might not be long for this world. For this reason, it also pays to keep on top of your employers profile by following them on social media, setting up Google Alerts with the company name, and so on. Not every bad mention in the press equals impending doom, but youre better off knowing which way the wind is blowing ... even if its about to change. musiknote that your company doesnt need to be doing badly for big changes to impact your career. An acquisition or other structural change could affect you just as much as a business failure. 2. You Dont Have Anything to Do Your biggest project now belongs to someone else, while your lesser responsibilities have landed on an interns plate. Your reports are reassigned to another manager, and your clients are gradually making their way to someone elses list. Meanwhile, youre trying to find ways to keep busy that dont involve welchesting time on social media. Start using that free time to develop a stra tegy for finding another, better job. (Just dont do any of the actual job searching at work. Thats a great way to turn a potential layoff into termination for cause.) 3. Your Project Deadlines Just Moved Up ... and Theyre All Around the Same Time Maybe, however, its not so much that you dont have anything to do, but that your boss seems to be in a much bigger hurry than usual to get your projects wrapped up. This doesnt necessarily point to imminent dismissal, but if a lot of your deadlines move up all at once, and to the same general time frame, you could be looking at your own deadline for termination. As mean as it sounds to make someone clear their to-do list before letting them know their services are no longer required, it happens. Keep an eye out, so you can see it coming if its about to happen to you. 4. Your Boss Just Doesnt Seem to Like You Maybe you used to get along with your boss, but now you cant seem to communicate about even the most basic issues. Or maybe yo ur workday has turned into a blame game, and youre always It. Perhaps there was even an inciting incident, such a genuine mistake on your part that no amount of effort or responsibility-taking seems to erase. Whatever the reason, if the boss doesnt seem to be on your side, or if youve received a warning about your performance, it might be time to start polishing your resume. 5. You Feel Suddenly and Completely Out of Place This indicator is a little harder to pin down than some of the others, but its still worth paying attention to. If you feel like an alien life-form at work, with totally different priorities, interests, and perspectives than everyone youre working with, it might be time to move on. Even if youre not about to be given a cardboard box and told to relocate your things to your home schreibstube, you deserve more out of your employment experience. Start thinking about making a jump to a more congenial corporate culture, before youre pushed out. *Note Not all employ ees who lose their jobs qualify for unemployment. Learn more about who is eligible for benefits, and check with your state unemployment office for specific information. What Else You Should Know Should You Quit Before You Get Fired?

Time for Passive Safety at Nuclear Plants

Time for Passive Safety at Nuclear Plants Time for Passive Safety at Nuclear Plants Time for Passive Safety at Nuclear Plants As the nuclear industry begins to shift toward small modular reactors as the best solution for low-carbon power for future generations, nuclear engineers at the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) in Idaho Falls are hard at work on new passive safety systems. These will have new ways of cooling and shutting down reactors in an emergency without certain actions from an operator or electronic system. In a passive safety system, the reactor can shut itself down by using the basic nature of physics, such as gravity, says Dr. Fatih Aydogan, assistant professor in the mechanical engineering department at the University of Idahos nuclear engineering program. Water-cooling systems could run by gravity rather than pumps, he explained. While there has been interest in passive safety systems for more than a decade, activity has been stepped up in the past three years. Safety systems are a critical topic after the Fukushima Dai-ichi accident, says Aydogan referring to the earthquake and tsunami that resulted in permanent damage to reactors at the Japanese nuclear power plant. A schematic of a hydrogen-moderated, self-regulating nuclear power module. Image: Wikimedia Commons He and his research group have analyzed a number of different current passive safety systems used for both light water reactors and advanced small modular reactors around the world. Aydogan conducts research at CAES, a research and education partnership between Boise State University, Idaho National Laboratory, Idaho State University, and the University of Idaho. I do not want to reinvent the wheel so first I looked at different designs in the world for their pluses and minuses. Now I am trying to bring all the pluses into the next generation [of safety features], says Aydogan. For example, one design from Japan uses a new pump for the coolant that has no mechanical parts. In the beginning, I thought it would be a piece of cake, he says, but after a short time he realized there were as many as 40 different kinds of safety designs. Right now I am trying to bring all of these ideas together. All this while also meeting any recently changed design requirements as well, he says. The U.S. Department of Energy has increased its support for the use of small modular reactors in the U.S. as part of its push for clean, affordable nuclear power options. Building smaller reactors lowers capital costs for each project, are faster to build, and offer more flexibility in where and for what purpose they can be used. Prior to his appointment at the university in 2012, Aydogan spent five years as a technical lead on small modular reactor design in Westinghouse Electrics nuclear power program. He says his goal when he joined the university was to increase the safety of nuclear systems by making them passive, affordable, simple, and useful for modular systems that are built at the factory, shipped to a site, and installed. In the past, many parts of systems were typically manufactured on site, and that increased costs. Ayogan says he is mindful that the systems must be economical because the nuclear energy industry is being challenged by the natural gas industry due to falling prices of gas. He believes one way to make the system simpler is to have just one coolant loop to cool the reactor core instead of the current system of a series of loops that, in turn, cool one another. This would reduce the number of components. I am also eliminating an active pump, because if we dont have electricity, we cant use it, he says. My designs dont use active systems; they are pure passive systems so if there is an accident, the reactor cools down using gravity. This is critical. Another important aspect is that his concept is a system that can cool down the reactor indefinitely rather than limited to the 72 hours previously thought adequate. His designs are in the concept stage that show his ideas can work. Once patents are registered, the project would be picked up by industry for development and validation. Its typically anywhere from five years to 20 years from concept to market, he says, depending in part of whether the designs will be used at an existing plant or a new one. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. The researchers found that fulfillment tends to decrease with age and then surges again around retirement  years, the study reports. “That is, life satisfaction is higher on average for younger adults, dropping to its lowest point when people are in their 40s, rising again as people near retirement age, and falling again as we enter our 80s.”Spending frequency comes close to rivaling age in this regard, but its impact on wellness is ultimately dependent on social status.  For example, “household spending” was found to have a larger positive association with wellness.  Spending on things like eating out and hotels was also found to me people more satisfied, it thus follows that households with higher disposable income were more likely to report being happy. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Staying awake The surprisingly effective way to treat depression

Staying awake The surprisingly effective way to treat depression Staying awake The surprisingly effective way to treat depression The first sign that something is happening is Angelina’s hands. As she chats to the nurse in Italian, she begins to gesticulate, jabbing, moulding and circling the air with her fingers. As the minutes pass and Angelina becomes increasingly animated, I notice a musicality to her voice that I’m sure wasn’t there earlier. The lines in her forehead seem to be softening, and the pursing and stretching of her lips and the crinkling of her eyes tell me as much about her mental state as any interpreter could.Angelina is coming to life, precisely as my body is beginning to shut down. It’s 2 am, and we’re sat in the brightly lit kitchen of a Milanese psychiatric ward, eating spaghetti. There’s a dull ache behind my eyes, and I keep on zoning out, but Angelina won’t be going to bed for at least another 17 hours, so I’m steeling myself for a long night. In case I doubted her resolve, Angelina removes her glasses, looks directly at me, and uses her thumbs and forefingers to pull o pen the wrinkled, grey-tinged skin around her eyes. “Occhi aperti,” she says. Eyes open. This is the second night in three that Angelina has been deliberately deprived of sleep. For a person with bipolar disorder who has spent the past two years in a deep and crippling depression, it may sound like the last thing she needs, but Angelina â€" and the doctors treating her â€" hope it will be her salvation. For two decades, Francesco Benedetti, who heads the psychiatry and clinical psychobiology unit at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, has been investigating so-called wake therapy, in combination with bright light exposure and lithium, as a means of treating depression where drugs have often failed. As a result, psychiatrists in the USA, the UK and other European countries are starting to take notice, launching variations of it in their own clinics. These ‘chronotherapies’ seem to work by kick-starting a sluggish biological clock; in doing so, they’re also shedding new light on the underlying pathology of depression, and on the function of sleep more generally.“Sleep deprivation really has opposite effects in healthy people and those with depression,” says Benedetti. If you’re healthy and you don’t sleep, you’ll feel in a bad mood. But if you’re depressed, it can prompt an immediate improvement in mood, and in cognitive abilities. But, Benedetti adds, there’s a catch: once you go to sleep and catch up on those missed hours of sleep, you’ll have a 95 percent chance of relapse. The antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation was first published in a report in Germany in 1959. This captured the imagination of a young researcher from Tübingen in Germany, Burkhard Pflug, who investigated the effect in his doctoral thesis and in subsequent studies during the 1970s. By systematically depriving depressed people of sleep, he confirmed that spending a single night awake could jolt them out of depression.Benedetti became interested in this idea as a yo ung psychiatrist in the early 1990s. Prozac had been launched just a few years earlier, hailing a revolution in the treatment of depression. But such drugs were rarely tested on people with bipolar disorder. Bitter experience has since taught Benedetti that antidepressants are largely ineffective for people with bipolar depression anyway. His patients were in desperate need of an alternative, and his supervisor, Enrico Smeraldi, had an idea up his sleeve. Having read some of the early papers on wake therapy, he tested their theories on his own patients, with positive results. “We knew it worked,” says Benedetti. “Patients with these terrible histories were getting well immediately. My task was finding a way of making them stay well.”So he and his colleagues turned to the scientific literature for ideas. A handful of American studies had suggested that lithium might prolong the effect of sleep deprivation, so they investigated that. They found that 65 percent of patients takin g lithium showed a sustained response to sleep deprivation when assessed after three months, compared to just 10 percent of those not taking the drug.Since even a short nap could undermine the efficacy of the treatment, they also started searching for new ways of keeping patients awake at night, and drew inspiration from aviation medicine, where bright light was being used to keep pilots alert. This too extended the effects of sleep deprivation, to a similar extent as lithium.“We decided to give them the whole package, and the effect was brilliant,” says Benedetti. By the late 1990s, they were routinely treating patients with triple chronotherapy: sleep deprivation, lithium and light. The sleep deprivations would occur every other night for a week, and bright light exposure for 30 minutes each morning would be continued for a further two weeks â€" a protocol they continue to use to this day. “We can think of it not as sleep-depriving people, but as modifying or enlarging the p eriod of the sleep-wake cycle from 24 to 48 hours,” says Benedetti. “People go to bed every two nights, but when they go to bed, they can sleep for as long as they want.”San Raffaele Hospital first introduced triple chronotherapy in 1996. Since then, it has treated close to a thousand patients with bipolar depression â€" many of whom had failed to respond to antidepressant drugs. The results speak for themselves: according to the most recent data, 70 percent of people with drug-resistant bipolar depression responded to triple chronotherapy within the first week, and 55 percent had a sustained improvement in their depression one month later. And whereas antidepressants â€" if they work â€" can take over a month to have an effect, and can increase the risk of suicide in the meantime, chronotherapy usually produces an immediate and persistent decrease in suicidal thoughts, even after just one night of sleep deprivation.Angelina was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder 30 years ag o, when she was in her late 30s. The diagnosis followed a period of intense stress: her husband was facing a tribunal at work, and they were worried about having enough money to support themselves and the kids. Angelina fell into a depression that lasted nearly three years. Since then, her mood has oscillated, but she’s down more often than not. She takes an arsenal of drugs â€" antidepressants, mood stabilisers, anti-anxiety drugs and sleeping tablets â€" which she dislikes because they make her feel like a patient, even though she acknowledges this is what she is.If I’d met her three days ago, she says, it’s unlikely I would have recognised her. She didn’t want to do anything, she’d stopped washing her hair or wearing make-up, and she stank. She also felt very pessimistic about the future. After her first night of sleep deprivation, she’d felt more energetic, but this largely subsided after her recovery sleep. Even so, today she felt motivated enough to visit a hairdre sser in anticipation of my visit. I compliment her appearance, and she pats her dyed, golden waves, thanking me for noticing. At 3am, we move to the light room, and entering is like being transported forward to midday. Bright sunlight streams in through the skylights overhead, falling on five armchairs, which are lined up against the wall. This is an illusion, of course â€" the blue sky and brilliant sun are nothing more than coloured plastic and a very bright light â€" but the effect is exhilarating nonetheless. I could be sitting on a sun lounger at midday; the only thing missing is the heat. When I’d interviewed her seven hours earlier, with the help of an interpreter, Angelina’s face had remained expressionless as she’d replied. Now, at 3.20am, she is smiling, and even beginning to initiate a conversation with me in English, which she’d claimed not to speak. By dawn, Angelina’s telling me about the family history she’s started writing, which she’d like to pick up aga in, and inviting me to stay with her in Sicily. How could something as simple as staying awake overnight bring about such a transformation? Unpicking the mechanism isn’t straightforward: we still don’t fully understand the nature of depression or the function of sleep, both of which involve multiple areas of the brain. But recent studies have started to yield some insights. © Eva Bee for MosaicThe brain activity of people with depression looks different during sleep and wakefulness than that of healthy people. During the day, wake-promoting signals coming from the circadian system â€" our internal 24-hour biological clock â€" are thought to help us resist sleep, with these signals being replaced by sleep-promoting ones at night. Our brain cells work in cycles too, becoming increasingly excitable in response to stimuli during wakefulness, with this excitability dissipating when we sleep. But in people with depression and bipolar disorder, these fluctuations appear dampened or abse nt.Depression is also associated with altered daily rhythms of hormone secretion and body temperature, and the more severe the illness, the greater the degree of disruption. Like the sleep signals, these rhythms are also driven by the body’s circadian system, which itself is driven by a set of interacting proteins, encoded by ‘clock genes’ that are expressed in a rhythmic pattern throughout the day. They drive hundreds of different cellular processes, enabling them to keep time with one another and turn on and off. A circadian clock ticks in every cell of your body, including your brain cells, and they are coordinated by an area of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which responds to light.“When people are seriously depressed, their circadian rhythms tend to be very flat; they don’t get the usual response of melatonin rising in the evening, and the cortisol levels are consistently high rather than falling in the evening and the night,” says Steinn Steingrimsso n, a psychiatrist at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, who is currently running a trial of wake therapy.Recovery from depression is associated with a normalisation of these cycles. “I think depression may be one of the consequences of this basic flattening of circadian rhythms and homeostasis in the brain,” says Benedetti. “When we sleep-deprive depressed people, we restore this cyclical process.”But how does this restoration come about? One possibility is that depressed people simply need added sleep pressure to jump-start a sluggish system. Sleep pressure â€" our urge to sleep â€" is thought to arise because of the gradual release of adenosine in the brain. It builds up throughout the day and attaches to adenosine receptors on neurons, making us feel drowsy. Drugs that trigger these receptors have the same effect, whereas drugs that block them â€" such as caffeine â€" make us feel more awake. To investigate whether this process might underpin the antide pressant effects of prolonged wakefulness, researchers at Tufts University in Massachusetts took mice with depression-like symptoms and administered high doses of a compound that triggers adenosine receptors, mimicking what happens during sleep deprivation. After 12 hours, the mice had improved, measured by how long they spent trying to escape when forced to swim or when suspended by their tails. We also know sleep deprivation does other things to the depressed brain. It prompts changes in the balance of neurotransmitters in areas that help to regulate mood, and it restores normal activity in emotion-processing areas of the brain, strengthening connections between them. And as Benedetti and his team discovered, if wake therapy kick-starts a sluggish circadian rhythm, lithium and light therapy seem to help maintain it. Lithium has been used as a mood stabiliser for years without anyone really understanding how it works, but we know it boosts the expression of a protein, called Per2, th at drives the molecular clock in cells.Bright light, meanwhile, is known to alter the rhythms of the suprachiasmatic nucleus, as well as boosting activity in emotion-processing areas of the brain more directly. Indeed, the American Psychiatric Association states that light therapy is as effective as most antidepressants in treating non-seasonal depression. © Eva Bee for MosaicIn spite of its promising results against bipolar disorder, wake therapy has been slow to catch on in other countries. “You could be cynical and say it’s because you can’t patent it,” says David Veale, a consultant psychiatrist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.Certainly, Benedetti has never been offered pharmaceutical funding to carry out his trials of chronotherapy. Instead, he has â€" until recently â€" been reliant on government funding, which is often in short supply. His current research is being funded by the EU. Had he followed the conventional route of accepting industry mon ey to run drug trials with his patients, he quips, he probably wouldn’t be living in a two-bedroom apartment and driving a 1998 Honda Civic. The bias towards pharmaceutical solutions has kept chronotherapy below the radar for many psychiatrists. “A lot of people just don’t know about it,” says Veale. It’s also difficult to find a suitable placebo for sleep deprivation or bright light exposure, which means that large, randomised placebo-controlled trials of chronotherapy haven’t been done. Because of this, there’s some scepticism about how well it really works. “While there is increasing interest, I don’t think many treatments based on this approach are yet routinely used â€" the evidence needs to be better and there are some practical difficulties in implementing things like sleep deprivation,” says John Geddes, a professor of epidemiological psychiatry at the University of Oxford.Even so, interest in the processes underpinning chronotherapy is beginning to spread. “Insights into the biology of sleep and circadian systems are now providing promising targets for treatment development,” says Geddes. “It goes beyond pharmaceuticals â€" targeting sleep with psychological treatments might also help or even prevent mental disorders.”In the UK, the USA, Denmark and Sweden, psychiatrists are investigating chronotherapy as a treatment for general depression. “A lot of the studies that have been done so far have been very small,” says Veale, who is currently planning a feasibility study at Maudsley Hospital in London. “We need to demonstrate that it is feasible and that people can adhere to it.”So far, what studies there have been have produced mixed results. Klaus Martiny, who researches non-drug methods for treating depression at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, has published two trials looking at the effects of sleep deprivation, together with daily morning bright light and regular bedtimes, on general depression. In the firs t study, 75 patients were given the antidepressant duloxetine, in combination with either chronotherapy or daily exercise. After the first week, 41 percent of the chronotherapy group had experienced a halving of their symptoms, compared to 13 percent of the exercise group. And at 29 weeks, 62 percent of the wake therapy patients were symptom-free, compared to 38 percent of those in the exercise group. In Martiny’s second study, severely depressed hospital inpatients who had failed to respond to antidepressant drugs were offered the same chronotherapy package as an add-on to the drugs and psychotherapy they were undergoing. After one week, those in the chronotherapy group improved significantly more than the group receiving standard treatment, although in subsequent weeks the control group caught up.No one has yet compared wake therapy head-to-head with antidepressants; neither has it been tested against bright light therapy and lithium alone. But even if it’s only effective for a minority, many people with depression â€" and indeed psychiatrists â€" may find the idea of a drug-free treatment attractive.“I’m a pill pusher for a living, and it still appeals to me to do something that doesn’t involve pills,” says Jonathan Stewart, a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University in New York, who is currently running a wake therapy trial at New York State Psychiatric Institute.Unlike Benedetti, Stewart only keeps patients awake for one night: “I couldn’t see a lot of people agreeing to stay in hospital for three nights, and it also requires a lot of nursing and resources,” he says. Instead, he uses something called sleep phase advance, where on the days after a night of sleep deprivation, the time the patient goes to sleep and wakes up is systematically brought forward. So far, Stewart has treated around 20 patients with this protocol, and 12 have shown a response â€" most of them during the first week.It may also work as a prophylactic: recent studies suggest that teenagers whose parents set â€" and manage to enforce â€" earlier bedtimes are less at risk of depression and suicidal thinking. Like light therapy and sleep deprivation, the precise mechanism is unclear, but researchers suspect a closer fit between sleep time and the natural light-dark cycle is important. But sleep phase advance has so far failed to hit the mainstream. And, Stewart accepts, it’s not for everybody. “For those for whom it works, it’s a miracle cure. But just as Prozac doesn’t get everyone better who takes it, neither does this,” he says. “My problem is that I have no idea ahead of time who it’s going to help.”Depression can strike anyone, but there’s mounting evidence that genetic variations can disrupt the circadian system to make certain people more vulnerable. Several clock gene variations have been associated with an elevated risk of developing mood disorders.Stress can then compound the problem. Our response to it is largely mediated through the hormone cortisol, which is under strong circadian control, but cortisol itself also directly influences the timing of our circadian clocks. So if you have a weak clock, the added burden of stress could be enough to tip your system over the edge.Indeed, you can trigger depressive symptoms in mice by repeatedly exposing them to a noxious stimulus, such as an electric shock, from which they can’t escape â€" a phenomenon called learned helplessness. In the face of this ongoing stress, the animals eventually just give up and exhibit depression-like behaviours. When David Welsh, a psychiatrist at the University of California, San Diego, analysed the brains of mice that had depressive symptoms, he found disrupted circadian rhythms in two critical areas of the brain’s reward circuit â€" a system that’s strongly implicated in depression. © Eva Bee for MosaicBut Welsh has also shown that a disturbed circadian system itself can cause depression-like symptoms. When he took healthy mice and knocked out a key clock gene in the brain’s master clock, they looked just like the depressed mice he’d been studying earlier. “They don’t need to learn to be helpless, they are already helpless,” Welsh says.So if disrupted circadian rhythms are a likely cause of depression, what can be done to prevent rather than treat them? Is it possible to strengthen your circadian clock to increase psychological resilience, rather than remedy depressive symptoms by forgoing sleep?Martiny thinks so. He is currently testing whether keeping a more regular daily schedule could prevent his depressed inpatients from relapsing once they’ve recovered and are released from the psychiatric ward. “That’s when the trouble usually comes,” he says. “Once they’re discharged their depression gets worse again.”Peter is a 45-year-old care assistant from Copenhagen who has battled with depression since his early teens. Like Angelina and many others with depre ssion, his first episode followed a period of intense stress and upheaval. His sister, who more or less brought him up, left home when he was 13, leaving him with an uninterested mother and a father who also suffered from severe depression. Soon after that, his father died of cancer â€" another shock, as he’d kept his prognosis hidden until the week before his death.Peter’s depression has seen him hospitalised six times, including for a month last April. “In some ways being in hospital is a relief,” he says. However, he feels guilty about the effect it has on his sons, aged seven and nine. “My youngest boy said he cried every night I was in hospital, because I wasn’t there to hug him.”So when Martiny told Peter about the study he had just started recruiting for, he readily agreed to participate. Dubbed ‘circadian-reinforcement therapy’, the idea is to strengthen people’s circadian rhythms by encouraging regularity in their sleep, wake, meal and exercise times, an d pushing them to spend more time outdoors, exposed to daylight. For four weeks after leaving the psychiatric ward in May, Peter wore a device that tracked his activity and sleep, and he completed regular mood questionnaires. If there was any deviation in his routine, he would receive a phone call to find out what had happened. When I meet Peter, we joke about the tan lines around his eyes; obviously, he’s been taking the advice seriously. He laughs: “Yes, I’m getting outdoors to the park, and if it’s nice weather, I take my children to the beach, for walks, or to the playground, because then I will get some light, and that improves my mood.”Those aren’t the only changes he’s made. He now gets up at 6 every morning to help his wife with the children. Even if he’s not hungry he eats breakfast: typically, yoghurt with muesli. He doesn’t take naps and tries to be in bed by 10 pm. If Peter does wake up at night, he practises mindfulness â€" a technique he picked up in ho spital.Martiny pulls up Peter’s data on his computer. It confirms the shift towards earlier sleep and wake times, and shows an improvement in the quality of his sleep, which is mirrored by his mood scores. Immediately after his release from hospital, these averaged around 6 out of 10. But after two weeks they’d risen to consistent 8s or 9s, and one day, he even managed a 10. At the beginning of June, he returned to his job at the care home, where he works 35 hours a week. “Having a routine has really helped me,” he says. © Eva Bee for MosaicSo far, Martiny has recruited 20 patients to his trial, but his target is 120; it’s therefore too soon to know how many will respond the same way as Peter, or indeed, if his psychological health will be maintained. Even so, there’s mounting evidence that good sleep routine can help our mental wellbeing. According to a study published in  Lancet Psychiatry  in September 2017 â€" the largest randomised trial of a psychological intervent ion to date â€" insomniacs who underwent a ten-week course of cognitive behavioural therapy to address their sleep problems showed sustained reductions in paranoia and hallucinatory experiences as a result. They also experienced improvements in symptoms of depression and anxiety, fewer nightmares, better psychological wellbeing and day-to-day functioning, and they were less likely to experience a depressive episode or anxiety disorder during the course of the trial.Sleep, routine and daylight. It’s a simple formula, and easy to take for granted. But imagine if it really could reduce the incidence of depression and help people to recover from it more quickly. Not only would it improve the quality of countless lives, it would save health systems money. In the case of wake therapy, Benedetti cautions that it isn’t something people should try to administer to themselves at home. Particularly for anyone who has bipolar disorder, there’s a risk of it triggering a switch into mania †" although in his experience, the risk is smaller than that posed by taking antidepressants. Keeping yourself awake overnight is also difficult, and some patients temporarily slip back into depression or enter a mixed mood state, which can be dangerous. “I want to be there to speak about it to them when it happens,” Benedetti says. Mixed states often precede suicide attempts.A week after spending the night awake with Angelina, I call Benedetti to check her progress. He tells me that after the third sleep deprivation, she experienced a full remission in her symptoms and returned to Sicily with her husband. That week, they were due to be marking their 50th wedding anniversary. When I’d asked her if she thought her husband would notice any change in her symptoms, she’d said she hoped he’d notice the change in her physical appearance.Hope. After she has spent more than half her life without it, I suspect its return is the most precious golden anniversary gift of all.Linda Gedd es  is a Bristol-based freelance journalist writing about biology, medicine,  and technology. Engineers Get the Boot

Engineers Get the Boot Engineers Get the Boot Engineers Get the Boot Thinking on your feet is critical in engineering, but thinking about your feet can be important too. Engineers in the early 20th century thought quite a lot about their feet and the comfort and safety of their protective footwear. In the run-up to World War II, they finally got the boot the iconic engineer boot, that is. What began as a rugged boot for working stiffs is today also a high-fashion favorite of the upper crust. And in an industry that has become highly automated and outsourced, the top U.S. sellers of engineer-style boots proudly make each pair by hand often with the same tools their grandparents used. Engineer boot designs can vary, but they all share a few basic traits. It starts with full-grain leather, which can be either black or brown but is typically oiled to add flexibility and durability. The most distinctive feature is the tall stovepipe-style leather leg shaft, which can extend anywhere from 7 to 17 inches up the wearers leg depending on the style. The double-layer shaft protects the wearer from heat, water, brush, and other hazards. In the absence of eyelets, a tongue and laces, the engineer boot gains its other telltale feature the adjustable leather straps across the ankle and at the top of the shaft. Metal buckles allow the user to tighten or loosen the straps to control snugness. Beyond these few standards, engineer boots offer buyers a choice in qualities such as heel height, sole material, toe shape, or the use of steel reinforcements. An engineer boot ad in a 1943 Chippewa catalogue. Image: Chippewa Chippewa Shoe Manufacturing Company (Chippewa Falls, WI) believed to have originated the engineer boot in the late 1930s based its first designs on the English riding boot. They may have been inspired by the popularity of the earlier Harness boot introduced by Frye (Marlborough, MA) around 1860. Adopted by the U.S. Cavalry, the Harnesss familiar non-lacing style also incorporates distinctive ankle straps which by metal rings rather than buckles. They may be old, but engineer boots are trendier than ever today among customers who appreciate back-to-basics handmade products but also want that walk on the wild side look. Along with other examples of old-school industrial boots, engineers are enjoying new popularity as a chic fashion statement. Old-school makers like Frye, Red Wing (Red Wing, MN), and Wolverine (Rockford, MI) have taken engineer boots upscale to capture nontraditional customers including women, young professionals and hipsters. For photographic evidence, theres even a website Hipsters in Work Boots documenting the phenomenon. Our Boss boots are widely sold in Asia and Europe strictly as fashion, says Roberta Shoemaker, president and CEO of the West Coast Shoe Company (Wesco, Scappoose, OR). Boots Made for Working Its easy to spot engineer boots on the street, but its harder to track how they got the name. Engineering as we think of the job title today is not quite the get-your-hands-dirty profession imagined by Chippewas marketing department when the boot was named. But as broadly applied to jobs involving machines, production, or measurement in harsh conditions, engineering skills were in big demand during the run-up to World War II. The assembly lines, boiler rooms, and steel mills of yore were rife with physical hazards from exposed machine works, fast-moving production equipment, molten metal, and flying debris. Boots with laces, metal fittings, and other out-croppings posed a real threat of injury if entangled in moving parts. And customers in some industries cared more about how fast the boots could come off than about how snugly they fit. According to Shoemaker, when Wescos engineer boot (the ancestor of the companys current Boss style) hit the market in 1939 this safety feature made them a hit with workers in nearby Portlands defense plants. There were large shipyards in Portland and the welders making the ships needed boots they could kick off quickly should sparks get down inside them, she says. That was the beginning of our history with this boot. Bob Shoemaker, patriarch of the family-owned business, recalls the boots ups and downs in their early years. They made lots and lots of engineer boots, but then they kind of went poof there werent any more, he says. Then came the motorcycle craze and they brought it back. Marlon Brando in The Wild One clad in his pair of Chippewa engineer boots. Image: Flckr Born to be Wild In a sense, the engineer boot helped kickstart the motorcycle mania that in turn revived its sales. In 1953 Marlon Brando starred in The Wild One as Johnny Strabler, the hell-raising chieftain of the degenerate Black Rebels Motorcycle Club. As they terrorized a sleepy southern California town, Brando and his Rebels set the unofficial dress code for the outlaw biker movement: skippers cap, black leather bomber jacket, t-shirt, rolled-up Levis, and of course that road-worn pair of engineer boots. The film and the look strongly influenced an emerging subculture of free-spirited motorcycle enthusiasts and the new rock-n-roll stars who copied them. Soon, millions of teenagers were sporting the same rebellious style. But like the industrial workers before them, the so-called outlaw biker set has always known the engineer boot is about more looking cool. With no laces to mess with or get caught in the drive belt, strong insulation from engine heat, and full lower-leg protection in case o f wipeouts, theyre perfect for long stretches of open road. A Stitch Out of Time Part of the engineer boots lore is its handmade character and a made in the USA ethos. In the fast-changing world of fashion, handcrafted work boots are an anomaly a look that remains in style because it never changes. Most high-end work boot makers rely on well-established manufacturing methods and machinery to assist highly skilled craftspeople through the process. Machines like the workhorse Puritan sewing machines have been stitching together engineer boots for 75 years under the control of operators who spend years mastering the craft. The process relies on human attributes like hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, color perception, and good aesthetic judgement, says Roy Smith, plant manager at Red Wing Theres not a new technology out there that allows us to automate things like this. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. They made lots and lots of engineer boots â€" and then they went kind of poof. Bob Shoemaker, Wesco Boots

Forget Staying Calm Heres How to Be a Dynamic, Electric, and Passionate Public Speaker

Forget Staying Calm â€" Here’s How to Be a Dynamic, Electric, and Passionate Public Speaker Forget Staying Calm - Here’s How to Be a Dynamic, Electric, and Passionate Public Speaker Does the thought of public speaking make your heart leap - in terror? What happens next? Do you judge yourself for being nervous? Do you feel inadequate to play the role of speaker? Do you wish you could figure out how the heck to just get it over with? I promise you that you are not alone. Anticipating being seen and heard can feel very vulnerable, and our insecurities often jump to the surface when we are asked to speak to a group. However, with some simple changes in your thinking, you can have a much more positive experience as you prepare and when you present. Here are some strategies that can help you manage any insecurities and nervous energy that may arise when your boss asks you to do the next pitch or brief the board. Youll learn how to build your confidence by shifting your focus from your sweaty palms to the powerful impact your message can make. Who Are You? A lack of self-confidence often appears as a questioning of your very being, such as: * Who am I to lead this meeting? * Who am I to give my opinion? * Who am I to apply for this job? If you have ever asked yourself these questions, then you have experienced how disempowering they are. These questions have judgment baked into them, which can lead you to feeling small. Instead, list all of the reasons you are the person to take on the challenge at hand. Here are some statements to consider: * I have experience in this area. * I have a different or unusual perspective on this subject matter. * My background in several different areas enables me to see this from a new angle. Here are beginnings of statements that can lead you to some helpful new ways to think about your qualifications for speaking about a specific topic. Jot down what comes to mind as you read them: * I know a lot about ______________________________________. * When I experienced _____________________________________, I learned ______________________________________________. * I am concerned about ____________________________________. * I am hopeful about ______________________________________. Reminding yourself about your qualifications is a great way to build your confidence. Get Emotionally Centered by Focusing on Your Mission Instead of focusing on nerves or potential technological snafus, direct your emotional energy toward the ideas you are trying to communicate, why they matter, and what is at stake. Here are some questions that can help you to tap into your passion as you gain clarity on your mission: * What needs to change in your organization, society, or the world? * Why does this change matter? * Who is affected negatively or positively by the way things currently are? * Who will benefit if the change you are championing happens? * Why is this change important to you? The more you are personally and passionately invested in your mission, the more powerful your emotions will be and the more effective and confident your communication will be. How to Get Out of Your Own Way One of the main challenges of preparing yourself mentally and emotionally for public speaking is to stop focusing on the negative (nerves, potential problems) or on misguided assumptions you have. Here are a couple mistakes you can correct right now: Mistake No. 1: Thinking You Should Be Calm Onstage You probably think you want to be calm onstage, right? Think a little harder about that. Will being super chill while presenting make the impact you want? Did you ever leave a riveting speech or performance and say, Wow, I was so moved. That performer was so calm? Im guessing no. What gets and keeps our attention is a performance that is electric, dynamic, and passionate rather than calm, contained, and controlled. The best presentations make you say something more along the lines of, That performer was a force of nature! Such a response would imply that there was a lot of energy on the stage or set. The more committed and passionate you are about the topic at hand, the more riveting you will be. Instead of thinking you need to be super chill, spend some time determining what the best amount of energy is for your particular event. Mistake No. 2: Thinking That Feeling Nervous Is a  Bad Thing You might think, I wish I didnt feel so nervous. I hate this pit in my stomach and my shaking voice. I feel terrible and am really distracted. Lets break this situation down. There are the physical responses you are having: a rapid heartbeat, sweating, or shaky hands. Then there are the thoughts, usually judgments, you are having about these responses: Everyone can see Im a wreck! My body is being taken over by stress and I cant think straight! Whats happening is that you are nervous about being nervous. These thoughts do not help you focus, nor does this narrative set you up to succeed. Accepting these physical responses, rather than judging them and making up stories about what they mean, is key. The more comfortable you can get with the reactions of your body, the less stressed you will be. Instead of reacting with panic, see if you can respond with acceptance and patience. Check out these reactions instead: * My hands are shaking. Thats all right. It just means Ive got some extra energy flowing through my body, which I actually really need right now! * My heart is racing. Its okay. Im going to take a deep breath and slow down. The issue Im sharing with my audience deeply matters to me, so it makes sense that I feel a reaction when I think about it. Accepting how you feel is much better than fighting how you feel. Your Relationship With Your Nerves Thinking about your nerves objectively is a good way to separate them from the content of your presentation. As you answer the following questions, you will heighten your awareness of your current responses to your nerves: If you are nervous, what happens to you physically? (Examples: I turn bright red; I start to sweat; I feel the adrenaline.) If you are nervous, what happens to you mentally? (Examples: I go blank; my thoughts race; I get very self-critical; I get really focused.) If you are nervous, what happens to you emotionally? (Examples: I get emotional; Im scared everyone can see Im nervous; I feel like a failure; I feel good; I am challenging myself in a new way.) Is a need to be perfect or a fear of being imperfect part of why you feel nervous? Now that you have an outline of how youve felt about your nerves in the past, you can identify areas that could use improvement. The following questions will give you strategies for the next time you feel nervous: What could be a healthy way to think about striving for excellence  and being the best version of yourself? The next time you are having the physical experiences you  described in response to the first question, what are some helpful  ways for you to talk to yourself about them? What happened when I listened to some unwanted advice

What happened when I listened to some unwanted advice What happened when I listened to some unwanted advice Earlier this week, I was doing my regular morning swim. I don’t always swim in the “fast” lane because I’m definitely not the best swimmer out there. But, I did today because it was the emptiest lane and because I felt like pushing myself a bit.Another guy was also in the fast lane, someone who looked to be in his mid-60s. He was clearly a faster swimmer. After we had both been swimming for about 10 minutes, he had already lapped me twice. As I was resting at one end of the pool, trying to catch my breath between laps, he swam up to me and stopped to also catch his and share a bit of unsolicited advice with me.“You should try to put your head down into the water!” he said to me loudly as he stopped.“Huh?!” I replied, between my heavy breaths.“When your head’s outta the water like that, it’s slowing you down!” He then mimicked my stroke in the air, giving his best impression of my technique- or lack thereof. “Just look down into the water! You’ll go faster i f you put your head in the water!” He then demonstrated.I quickly replied, “I’m not here to go fast.” Then quickly turned away from him and redirected my gaze down toward the other end of the pool.He then noticed I was rubbing my neck and persisted. “Also, you won’t have a sore neck because you won’t be swinging your head to side-to-side like you are right now!”My neck HAD actually been feeling sore. But in an attempt to close down this conversation, I quickly turned toward him, threw up my defenses, and snapped, “That’s not why my neck is sore!” then turned away from him.My initial instinct was to dismiss him. After all, I didn’t need random guy who was twice my age critiquing my swimming style. I was there for a quick swim, not to perfect my stroke or make it to the Olympics. But I knew exactly what he was referring to. When I swim, I make a point to keep my head above water. As far back as I can remember,  I’ve been scared of water. I never liked swimming . Most of memories I have from my parents sending me to swimming lessons when I was young involve me gasping for air, swallowing lots of water, and not liking the sting of water on my eyes. On top of that, I’m very nearsighted, so when I’m swimming without my glasses, I’m in this blurry abyss of confusion where I have squint just to see where I’m going.I tried to take up swimming lessons again when I lived in Hawaii, but I didn’t get much better. My instructor even told me I’m a “sinker,” where the structure of my body is such that my legs naturally sink instead of float like most people’s. She told me that she had run into a few people like that, but it wasn’t very common. There’s always room for improvementWhen I moved to the UK seven years ago, I stopped playing tennis, so wanted to find another aerobic activity to do. I decided on swimming just because I quickly grew bored of running, and also, as a way of “conquering my fears,” and challenging myself. S omething about doing the actual activity that scared me was appealing.Since then, I’ve made a lot of progress. I went from barely being able to swim from one end of an Olympic sized pool to the other to being able to swim multiple laps without stopping. And it’s now the exercise I do more than any other exercise. When I went swimming with my wife a couple weeks ago, who’s quite a fast swimmer herself, she told me that she noticed I’ve gotten a lot faster. But one thing I still couldn’t get myself to do was put my face down into the water. I realize that sounds silly, but I’d rather thrash around in the pool than risk swallowing water. I know it slows me down, but just swimming without drowning was a bit step for me, and I felt my technique was good enough to do the job. Actually, I had been feeling pretty good about my progress. Until I crossed paths with this random guy who insisted on sharing some unsolicited advice I didn’t ask for.Unwanted advice isn’t always easy to receiveAs we both stood there side-by-side after our quick exchange, breathing heavily with our hands on our hips, staring down at the other end of the pool, I had a flash back to a conversation I’d just had the week prior. A friend of mine told me an acquaintance of hers had offered her advice about something she was going through, even though she didn’t ask for that person’s advice. She went on to tell me  how much receiving unsolicited advice irritated her. About how she hates it when people give her advice she doesn’t ask for. About how unsolicited advice is even more annoying when it comes from someone you don’t know, respect, or have anything in common anyway. In some ways, I saw her point. Everyone’s situation is unique, and advice, in many ways, is about taking your own experiences and trying to apply them to another situation with the presumption that A) that what worked for you will work for them, and B) that the situations are similar enough to where the ad vice you’re offering is relevant. As a coach, I try not to offer advice unless I’m asked for it explicitly for this very reason.Still, I tried to convince her that there can actually be value in accepting the advice people offer. I told her that sometimes, people may be able to spot something you can’t spot yourself. That maybe a different perspective could help open your eyes to something new. That at least  considering  someone’s advice may benefit you in some small way. In fact, I’d benefited a lot from people way more experienced than I who took the time to share some advice with me.She seemed unconvinced. What happened when I let my guard downAs that conversation bounced around in my head at that moment, I felt a bit like a hypocrite. Here I was saying how you should take on advice, yet I wasn’t willing to do it myself? I decided to let my guard down a bit and hear what this guy had to say. After all, my swimming technique WAS something I’d struggled with for decad es.I looked back over at him. “You know, I’m not the best swimmer. I don’t put my face down when I swim because I can’t seem to figure out the breathing.”“Ohh, well, the trick is to make sure you breath out completely when your head’s down BEFORE you turn your head to get some air. If you’re still breathing out while your head’s turned AND trying to breathe it, that won’t work.”“Yeah, that makes sense, but I still have this issue where when I turn my head to get air, I’m afraid of swallowing water.”He squinted his eyes and gave me a funny look. “All you have to do is just make sure you turn completely as you pull your arm out of the water. It’s less about turning your head, and more about letting it turn naturally as you pull your arm out of the water.” He then demonstrated.“Yeah, but … ” I started to rebut. He interrupted, “Just practice it slowly. Get the technique down, then when you get comfortable with it, you can go faster. Don’t kill yourself trying to go fast and practice your technique.”“Well, I’m also trying to keep up with you.” I joked. “You know, I don’t wanna slow you down!”He went onto tell me that he doesn’t often swim in the fast lane himself. That he always leaves that lane whenever someone faster comes along because it’s too much pressure. With that, he put his goggles back on, and before he pushed off to carry on swimming, he said, “Anyway, try it if you want.”I stood there, thinking about what he just said, and decided to give it a shot then and there. Oddly enough, just keeping in mind those two things: breathing out completely and allowing my head to turn naturally with my body, I was suddenly swimming with my face down in the water and breathing just fine.Everything changed, just like thatNow for those of you out there who are natural swimmers, you may not think this is a big deal. That I’m creating a lot of drama around a pretty simple part of swimming. But for me, someo ne who’s struggled with swimming for the past 35 years, I couldn’t believe how this short conversation suddenly helped me get over this mental barrier I’d held for my entire life. For me, being able to swim “correctly” was a game-changer.By being more horizontal in the water, I swam more quickly, immediately shaving 5 seconds off the time it takes me to swim a pool length. I swam more efficiently, making it down the length of the pool in 24 strokes instead of 36. I also swam longer before needing a break. Now that I’m doing this, I’ll never go back to my old way of swimming. Sure, I swill swallowed a bit of water today when I tried it again, but I’m going to keep working on it.I guess this is what people call a “teachable moment.” A moment when you allow yourself to be taught, when you open yourself up to learn some valuable lessons. In this case, my initial instinct was in line with my friend’s. To reject unsolicited advice. I can’t even fully explain why. But it’s some combination of pride, wanting people to mind their own business, and perhaps a bit of arrogance about not needing feedback. However, I learned a few lessons:Lesson #1: You improve when you allow yourself to be critiquedMy initial instinct was that I didn’t need to get better. That my swimming technique was good enough, so I wasn’t looking for advice on how to improve. But when I opened myself up to critique, and when I gave myself permission to openly share what was getting in my way, it actually helped me improve.Lesson #2: Game-changing advice can come from anyoneI’ve had so many swimming instructors in the past â€" no one has been able to help me crack this issue. Then, suddenly, one day, a random guy ended up explaining this in a way that just clicked with me. All I know about this guy is that his name is John. I may or may never see him again.Lesson #3: Putting your pride aside can open opportunitiesThat conversation I had with this guy could have simply ende d after I shut it down. I didn’t want to get anything out of that conversation, so I didn’t. At least not initially. But, when I allowed myself to put my pride and arrogance aside, I actually opened myself up to a new way of doing things.   That choice ultimately benefitted me.Lesson #4: Fears are as big as you allow them to beFor years, I’ve not dared to put my face in the water when swimming. Then, on one ordinary day, after an ordinary 20 second conversation, everything changed. Just like that. When you think about the literally OR metaphorically, it demonstrates how much we can inflate our own fears, to the point where they seem insurmountable. But sometimes, it’s actually not as big of a deal as you imagine. So if you find yourself instinctually rejecting unsolicited advice, just remember that a lot of wisdom exists in the world. When you allow yourself to receive it, you may be surprised how much of a positive impact it can have on things that matter to you. This article originally appeared on  jospehliu.com  and Be Leaderly.
